1 Kings 22:10-12

Context

22:10 Now the king of Israel and King Jehoshaphat of Judah were sitting on their respective thrones, 1  dressed in their robes, at the threshing floor at the entrance of the gate of Samaria. 2  All the prophets were prophesying before them. 22:11 Zedekiah son of Kenaanah made iron horns and said, “This is what the Lord says, ‘With these you will gore Syria until they are destroyed.’” 22:12 All the prophets were prophesying the same, saying, “Attack Ramoth Gilead! You will succeed; the Lord will hand it over to the king.”

Isaiah 14:9

Context

14:9 Sheol 3  below is stirred up about you,

ready to meet you when you arrive.

It rouses 4  the spirits of the dead for you,

all the former leaders of the earth; 5 

it makes all the former kings of the nations

rise from their thrones. 6 

Ezekiel 26:16

Context
26:16 All the princes of the sea will vacate 7  their thrones. They will remove their robes and strip off their embroidered clothes; they will clothe themselves with trembling. They will sit on the ground; they will tremble continually and be shocked at what has happened to you. 8 

Daniel 7:9

Context

7:9 “While I was watching,

thrones were set up,

and the Ancient of Days 9  took his seat.

His attire was white like snow;

the hair of his head was like lamb’s 10  wool.

His throne was ablaze with fire

and its wheels were all aflame. 11

19:28 Jesus 12  said to them, “I tell you the truth: 13  In the age when all things are renewed, 14  when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging 15  the twelve tribes of Israel.

[22:10]  1 tn Heb “were sitting, a man on his throne.”

[14:9]  3 sn Sheol is the proper name of the subterranean world which was regarded as the land of the dead.

[14:9]  4 tn Heb “arousing.” The form is probably a Polel infinitive absolute, rather than a third masculine singular perfect, for Sheol is grammatically feminine (note “stirred up”). See GKC 466 §145.t.

[14:9]  5 tn Heb “all the rams of the earth.” The animal epithet is used metaphorically here for leaders. See HALOT 903 s.v. *עַתּוּד.

[14:9]  6 tn Heb “lifting from their thrones all the kings of the nations.” הֵקִים (heqim, a Hiphil perfect third masculine singular) should be emended to an infinitive absolute (הָקֵים, haqem). See the note on “rouses” earlier in the verse.

[26:16]  7 tn Heb “descend from.”

[26:16]  8 tn Heb “and they will be astonished over you.”

[7:9]  9 tn Or “the Ancient One” (NAB, NRSV, NLT), although the traditional expression has been retained in the present translation because it is familiar to many readers. Cf. TEV “One who had been living for ever”; CEV “the Eternal God.”

[7:9]  10 tn Traditionally the Aramaic word נְקֵא (nÿqe’) has been rendered “pure,” but here it more likely means “of a lamb.” Cf. the Syriac neqya’ (“a sheep, ewe”). On this word see further, M. Sokoloff, “’amar neqe’, ‘Lamb’s Wool’ (Dan 7:9),” JBL 95 (1976): 277-79.

[7:9]  11 tn Aram “a flaming fire.”

[19:28]  12 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[19:28]  13 tn Grk “Truly (ἀμήν, amhn), I say to you.”

[19:28]  14 sn The Greek term translated the age when all things are renewed (παλιγγενεσία, palingenesia) is understood as a reference to the Messianic age, the time when all things are renewed and restored (cf. Rev 21:5).

[19:28]  15 sn The statement you…will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel looks at the future authority the Twelve will have when Jesus returns. They will share in Israel’s judgment.
